Joel RossJoel Ross is an American vibraphonist and composer known for his innovative approach to jazz, his virtuosic vibraphone playing, and his deep musicality. Born in Chicago and raised in nearby Oak Park, Ross began playing drums at a young age before switching to vibraphone in high school. He quickly developed a unique voice on the instrument, drawing influence from jazz legends like Bobby Hutcherson and Milt Jackson as well as contemporary musicians across genres. Ross gained recognition in the jazz scene for his work with the collaborative group Good Vibes, which includes fellow vibraphonist Warren Wolf and pianist Jeremy Corren. He has also performed and recorded with notable artists such as Marquis Hill, Makaya McCraven, and Ambrose Akinmusire, among others. In 2019, Ross released his debut album as a bandleader, "KingMaker," on Blue Note Records. The album features his working group, the Joel Ross Good Vibes Quintet, and showcases his dynamic compositions and exceptional improvisational skills. "KingMaker" received widespread critical acclaim and established Ross as a leading figure in contemporary jazz. Ross is known for his innovative approach to the vibraphone, which combines traditional jazz vocabulary with modern techniques and influences from other genres such as hip-hop and R&B.
